A Fiscal Intermediary (FI) is an organization that manages the financial aspects of OPWDD Self-Direction on behalf of the self-directing individual. Understanding the role of the FI is essential for anyone participating in Self-Direction.
What Does a Fiscal Intermediary Do?
The Fiscal Intermediary handles payroll for Direct Support Professionals, manages tax withholding and reporting, processes invoices and payments for approved services, maintains financial records and reports, and ensures compliance with OPWDD fiscal requirements.
The FI does not make decisions about how the budget is spent — that is the responsibility of the self-directing individual, in collaboration with their Support Broker and Care Manager. The FI simply processes the financial transactions according to the approved spending plan.
How to Choose a Fiscal Intermediary
OPWDD maintains a list of approved Fiscal Intermediaries in New York State. When choosing an FI, consider their responsiveness, their experience with OPWDD Self-Direction, their technology and reporting tools, and the quality of their customer service.
The Broker Queen can help you evaluate your options and choose an FI that is the right fit for your family's needs.
Working with Your FI, Care Manager, and Support Broker
Successful Self-Direction requires strong communication and collaboration between the individual, their FI, their Care Manager, and their Support Broker. The Broker Queen serves as a central point of coordination, helping to ensure that everyone is working together effectively to support the individual's goals.
