OPWDD Self-Direction is a model of service delivery that gives individuals with developmental disabilities and their families greater flexibility, choice, and control over the supports they receive. Instead of receiving services through a traditional provider agency, self-directing individuals manage their own budget and hire their own staff.

How Does Self-Direction Work?

In Self-Direction, the individual (or their designated representative) works with a Support Broker and a Care Manager to develop a spending plan that outlines how their OPWDD budget will be used. They then hire, train, and manage their own Direct Support Professionals (DSPs) — the people who provide day-to-day support.

The individual's budget is managed through a Fiscal Intermediary (FI), an organization that handles payroll, taxes, and other financial responsibilities on behalf of the self-directing individual.

What Are the Benefits?

Self-Direction offers several important advantages over traditional service delivery. Individuals can choose who supports them, when they receive support, and how that support is provided. This flexibility allows for more personalized, person-centered care that truly reflects the individual's goals, preferences, and lifestyle.

Is Self-Direction Right for You?

Self-Direction is a great option for individuals and families who want more control over their care, have the capacity to manage a budget and staff, and are committed to building a person-centered support system. It does require more active involvement than traditional services, but with the right support broker, the process is very manageable.

The Broker Queen can help you determine whether Self-Direction is the right fit for your family and guide you through every step of the process.
